DJI Mic 3: Compact, Powerful, and Ready to Capture Four Voices at Once
DJI’s engineering team is back at it again, introducing the third iteration of its wireless microphone system in under two years. The new DJI Mic 3 isn’t just an incremental upgrade — it comes with a complete design overhaul, enhanced audio quality, advanced noise reduction, and the ability to record multiple subjects simultaneously. That said, there’s one slight compromise compared to the previous model, which we’ll get to later. After testing the Mic 3 for over a week, here’s what makes it stand out.
Sleeker, Lighter, and More Flexible
The most obvious change is the transmitter itself: it’s smaller, lighter, and far easier to attach. Weighing just 16 grams (.58 ounces) — compared to 28 grams for the Mic 2 — it’s still slightly heavier than the Mic Mini (10 grams) but much more practical. The Mic 3 introduces a rotating clip in addition to the magnetic mount, letting you attach it to clothing, hats, or even unconventional surfaces. Five color options for the windscreen make it easy to match subjects’ attire, adding a subtle aesthetic touch.
Despite its smaller size, the transmitter still carries DJI’s branding on both sides — a necessary evil for advertising, though not exactly subtle. Overall, the combination of a lightweight build and versatile mounting options makes the Mic 3 far more discreet and easier to wear for long shoots.
Long-Lasting Battery Life for Marathon Shoots
The Mic 3 charging case holds one receiver and two transmitters. Unlike the previous model, you can leave the magnetic mounts and windscreens attached while storing the transmitters. Each transmitter runs up to eight hours on a full charge, and the receiver lasts ten hours. The charging case can recharge all three devices 2.4 times, providing up to 28 hours of extended use — perfect for full-day shoots.
Multi-Subject Recording and Timecode Sync
One of the standout features is the ability to support up to four transmitters and eight receivers simultaneously, making it ideal for multi-camera setups and group recordings. The Mic 3 also embeds high-precision timecode into internal recordings, simplifying the post-production workflow when syncing audio across multiple cameras. Additionally, the receiver can operate in quadrophonic mode for select Sony cameras, letting you output four channels to a single device.
Exceptional Audio Quality
DJI has upped its audio game with the Mic 3. It introduces two adaptive gain modes:
- Automatic Mode suppresses sudden volume spikes, ideal for noisy outdoor settings like sports events.
- Dynamic Mode adjusts gain in quieter environments, ensuring consistent loudness without affecting the natural tone of voices.
The Mic 3 also includes three tone presets — Regular, Rich, and Bright — to optimize different vocal ranges. Combined with two-level active noise cancellation, it effectively reduces background sounds like wind or air conditioning while preserving clarity. Additionally, lossless 48kHz 24-bit audio transmission ensures uncompressed, artifact-free sound, though it may be overkill for casual users. Internal dual-file recording supports 24-bit and 32-bit float formats, offering maximum flexibility for audio post-production.
Limitations to Consider
However, the Mic 3 does have one trade-off: the transmitter no longer has a 3.5mm port for an external lavalier mic. While the built-in microphone is high-quality, this may limit professional applications like broadcast or specialized audio setups.
Seamless Integration with DJI Devices
The Mic 3 integrates effortlessly with DJI’s OsmoAudio system, connecting directly to devices like the Osmo 360, Action 5 Pro, Action 4, and Osmo Pocket without a receiver. For other cameras or smartphones, it works via USB-C or 3.5mm TRS/TRRS ports.
Pricing and Availability
Currently, the DJI Mic 3 is priced at €309 ($359) for a full kit with two transmitters, one receiver, and a charging case. A smaller kit with a single transmitter and receiver costs €199 ($231). While it’s not yet officially available in the U.S., there’s hope it will arrive soon through third-party distributors, as seen with DJI’s Mavic 4 Pro.
Verdict
The DJI Mic 3 is a compact, versatile, and technologically advanced wireless microphone system. With improved portability, robust battery life, multi-subject recording, and superior audio quality, it’s a strong contender for creators, podcasters, and videographers. Just be aware of the lack of a wired mic option if that’s critical for your setup.
